Fleet operators are demanding a more ‘complete’ solution when it comes to accident and risk management, according to a national survey conducted by fleet risk management specialists E-Training World.
The survey, conducted in November to a sample of 162 companies operating fleets of vehicles, found that 73% would like to receive a combined accident and risk management solution through a single point of contact, with management reporting embodying both areas.
The survey also highlighted that more than half of companies are still undertaking their own accident management in-house (52%), with 32% using external accident management providers, and 16% using their insurance company or broker.
It also stated that the principal motivation for conducting risk assessments was to meet health and safety obligations (63%), with 19% stating that it was to determine training needs and 6% because ‘the law says you have to’.
Of the companies who had provided driver training, 89% said it was to improve driver safety, with health and safety obligations sitting in second place at 62%, and cost reduction in third at 37%.
“Our survey has confirmed to us that the market is shifting”, said Graham Hurdle, managing director of E-Training World. “The conversations we have been having with fleet operators in the last 12 months have been about providing more complete solutions and a good example of where we have achieved this is our total online portal which incorporates risk, licence, training and accident data. However, it’s not just in about accident and risk management. Conversations are now about fleet management as well, and a key focus for E-Training World in recent years has been to develop our own proposition so that we can offer far more than just an isolated risk assessments and driver training solutions.
“As for the reason why companies are conducting risk assessments and training, there are very few surprises. We are, however, surprised to see that the use of risk assessments to identify training needs is sitting so low on the scale. Our risk assessment does this with superb accuracy and when used properly can not only identify whether a driver is high, medium or low risk but can save a fortune in providing relevant training as opposed to a sheep dip approach.”
