In a survey of online driver risk assessments conducted by E-Training World in the last 6 months, both South and North London come out in the top five highest risk areas in the country.
The survey collated from data on more than 5,000 drivers, evenly sampled across the UK, placed South London, Wolverhampton, North London, the North East and Essex as where the highest risk fleet drivers live.
Whereas the lowest risk drivers are from Shropshire, the South West, Lancashire, the Scottish Highlands and the east coast of Scotland. The online system, used by E-Training World's fleet clients to assess driver risk and help meet their duty of care obligations, assesses attitude, knowledge, concentration and observation skills and hazard perception skills.
"Some might see driving in London as riskier than driving in the more remote areas of Scotland," commented Graham Hurdle, managing director of E-Training World, "however we do not risk assess the environment. It is the ability of the driver that is assessed, irrespective of where they live or what roads they are used to driving on.
“However, as a qualified ADI for more than 20 years, I’m very aware that areas where there are higher volumes of traffic create a more aggressive style of driving because you are always under pressure to compete for small gaps in the traffic, force your way out of junctions and handle other impatient drivers around you.
“Having analysed the high risk areas we’ve also noticed that many drivers on our system that have fallen into this category are foreign drivers, some of which come from countries which culturally have a more relaxed attitude towards risk and some of which have poor knowledge of road signs and their meanings.”
E-Training World's online driver risk assessment system is being used by fleets large and small, including some of the largest and highest profile companies in the UK.
