The Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers (AIRSO) recently reported that eight cars launched this year failed the EuroNCAP whiplash test.
Of the eight, three are sought after very much by fleet operators – the Ford Kuga, Citroen C5 and the Peugeot 308CC.
Whiplash is a common injury following a low speed collision and some 1,200 claims are made every day. An estimated 400 of these are drivers who are undertaking work related journeys.
"Obviously vehicles failing EuroNCAP tests is extremely concerning", said Jonathan Mosley, E-Training World's Director - Sales and Marketing, "however one of the reasons drivers suffer from whiplash is because they have never been shown how to set their head restraint correctly. We also live in a litigious society and whilst some drivers suffer genuine injuries others are tempted to make claims by the abundancy of no win-no fee firms looking to make money out of personal injury claims and this could also be the reason for such a high number of claims each day.
"These lawyers, who are looking out for personal injury claims, will use the fact that the company never explained how to set the head restraint as a method of taking employers to court for damages.
"In our online driver profiling system we ask the driver about their knowledge of setting head restaints as part of a driver's risk assessment. Gathering data as to whether a driver knows how to set their head restraint properly can help companies tailor their driver training to make drivers safer and avoid claims against the company.
"We also teach drivers how to set their head restraints in our online driver training system and because it is online the driver's participation in the training is recorded and auditable. No driver can say they were never told, making them safer and less tempted to make a claim".
