Driver Risk Assessments and DVD-Based Driver Training Paves the Way for A New Era of Assessing and Training HGV Drivers

One of the UK’s leading specialists in online driver risk assessments and e-driver training has extended its services into the HGV sector.

E-Training World has developed a driver risk assessment booklet, and an HGV driver training DVD, after research showed that less than 25% of vocational drivers have easy access to the internet and therefore could not easily utilise the existing online systems.

The risk assessment booklet is posted to HGV drivers who fill it in and post it back, making it easier than ever to assess HGV drivers as part of a company's legal obligation to conduct and record risk assessments. Five booklets exist in total so that drivers working for the same company do not all receive the same questions.
Once completed and returned, the information from the booklet is quickly keyed into a supporting system which automatically calculates, and records, the driver's risk rating - as High, Medium or Low risk. A bespoke training plan is also produced, based upon their answers and, for High risk drivers who require on road training, this can be emailed directly to a defensive driver training company as a ready made personal training plan.
“By conducting risk assessments of your HGV drivers you will identify whether someone is a High, Medium or Low risk driver”, said Graham Hurdle, managing director or E-Training World.
”High risk drivers will require in-vehicle training and low risk drivers simply need re-assessing either annually or every 6 months to ensure their risk rating has not changed. ”The biggest issue faced by most firms operating an HGV fleet, however, is what to do with Medium risk drivers. They do not pose the degree of risk that warrants taking them away from their duties to undertake in-vehicle intervention. However, they clearly need some form of refresher training. ”Our solution is a new interactive driver training DVD. By watching the DVD the driver is taken through a full HGV defensive driver training course, and the programme also enables them to get involved by answering questions using their remote control.

“The DVD is supported with a workbook, which contains questions about the training, and this must be completed by the driver and posted back to their fleet manager as evidence that they have watched the DVD. ”This forms part of a company's vital audit trail to demonstrate that it has met its duty of care requirements”.

One of the first companies to use the HGV services from E-Training World is Towergate Risk Solutions, which specialises in insurance for the commercial vehicle sector.

“We tested a number of options”, said Andrew Evans, managing director or Towergate Risk Solutions, “and found that E-Training World’s solution was the best”.
