Drivers Must Remain Calm during Fuel Shortages

With the threat of a strike by tanker drivers affecting fuel supplies at forecourts, company drivers are being advised to consider their schedule in the coming weeks to only make essential trips if the strike goes ahead.

Yet according to Jonathan Mosley, sales and marketing director at E-Training World, drivers should also be reminded to remain calm behind the wheel because aggressive behaviour is already being witnessed in certain areas as drivers panic purchase.

“The weather is unseasonably hot, drivers are waiting in long queues for fuel, many are under pressure to get to their next appointment and some are being turned away after long waits when the forecourt runs out,” said Jonathan.

“The queuing leads to drivers getting far too close to each other to ensure others do not try and cut in, and this can lead to needless knocks and scrapes, and when drivers are turned away they drive off angry and not in the right frame of mind.”

In E-Training World’s online driver training course, there is a section focusing on how emotions affect driving, whether you are celebrating a success, are annoyed about something, are upset or have just been involved in a disagreement.

“Attitude and frame of mind has a direct impact on how we drive,” said Jonathan. “It can affect our speed, our judgement and how we interact with other drivers - and this can lead to accidents.

“Our recommendation is to stay calm, accept that any fuel shortages will affect us all. And if you are feeling angry or running late, as a result of having to queue for fuel, give yourself a few moments to calm down before you drive off.”
